“My name is Krystal and I’m a food blogger.” I found myself saying this to a couple new strangers and new friends this past weekend.
I attended a food styling & photography workshop taught by the powerhouse dynamic duo, Matt Armendariz and Adam Pearson. They are amazing, they got skills, totally down to earth, and the coolest kids in the LBC. If you ever get the chance you must attend a workshop, conference, or check out their blogs. Do it!
Being an amateur photographer/food blogger, I wanted to further improve my skills because I recently acquired a DSLR camera. High-quality pictures truly give the food the proper setting and it appeals to the reader. I care about the quality of my food, and I know that 100% of the time my recipes are freaking awesome, but I will admit that my pictures are not 100% either. I needed the extra help and that’s the main reason why I took this class, it was definitely something to help those creative “mojo” styling skills flowing.
(Here’s my stylized burger that we created in class).
I’m so happy that I attended this workshop because I met 8 other wonderful creative minds aka food bloggers and photographers, too. We all have a passion for food and photography and it united us all together for one day. It was just a great arena to be welcomed for “food blogging” and they understand your need for “natural light” and crazy urges to buy specialty serving ware. We all oohed and ahhed over gorgeous platters, beautiful linens, and innovative little food techniques that make you go “hmmm that’s so freaking awesome.” (Using a blow torch is always cool in the kitchen!)
I feel inspired, motivated to take higher-quality pictures, and absolutely grateful for the experience, too. Plus, meeting Gaby from What’s Gaby Cooking was another highlight of the day for me. I totally food-geeked out! It’s always nice to meet the face behind a wonderful and creative food blog. And we got to see a sneak peak of Matt’s first book “On a Stick!” I can’t wait for my own copy! It’s tasty food and food art all in itself, and I predict that I will making a couple of the recipes for some of my friends and I. Sangria on a stick (drool!)
Also, we stylized pasta and learned the art of the dollop. We’re fancy like this.
Traci’s pasta looked sooo delicious, too. I had an awesome time sitting with her and we instantly clicked. Bloggers do that - we talk, eat, dream about food.
My main takeaways from the workshop:
Natural light is key to pictures.
Build with intention.
Create movement and texture.
Be creative.
Check out my fellow bloggers/photographers/new friends sites, too.
